Troye Sivan is an actor, a YouTube personality in addition to his singing/song-writing career. He’s appeared in an X-Men film, won a Teens choice award for “Choice Web Collaboration” in addition to the released his EP which was number five on the Billboard 200.
1.WILD
WILD is the first video of Troye Sivan’s Blue Neighbourhood Trilogy and are all songs from his Blue Neighbourhood album. The song is slightly slow pop song that was also release before the Blue Neighbourhood album as a prelude.
The music video tells the story of two boys who are best friends and how close they are, always paying together and how close their families are because of that. It also shows the issue of alcoholism as one of the boys fathers drinks continuously throughout the video and get into an argument and ends being taken home by the little boy. It also has slight undertones of sexuality as it often cuts to two boys hugging on a bed, which is innocent enough until they, shockingly, kiss just before the video ends.
The lyrics talk about someone who is trying not to fall for someone else but them feeling lonely and as finding that this other person is alike to them but also feeling that this might me wrong. He compares them as ‘two blue hearts locked in our wrong minds.’ The singer also come to depend on this other person asking ‘can you hold me?’ and ‘Can you make me leave my demons and my broken pieces behind?’ It seems like he cannot get this person out of his head and ‘it drives me wild’.
2.FOOLS
FOOLS starts just as WILD ends, with the two boys on the bed though it does cut to one of the boys seeming to be curled up crying and the other look out at the beach. This gives the impression that what happened between these two boys during the music video affected them in different ways. You also some scenes of the crying boy’s father beating him up and threatening him saying that if he came back he would kill both boys. This leads to him pushing away the other boy and starting a relationship with a girl. The video ends on a laptop that has the starting on the next video which looks like a funeral.
The lyrics speak about how the singer is tired of the place he’s in and how he hopes the people around him change. Before he says that he was a fool for falling in love with this other person repeatedly singing this. The lyrics also talks about how the singer had envisioned things for their future together and how he’s not going to give that up and even if he is a fool he still wants this.
3. TALK ME DOWN
TALK ME DOWN beginnings was shown on the laptop of the last video FOOLS showing the beginning of a funeral which was, again, shown on the laptop of the last video.
The music video tells a story of how a boy has just lost his father and it starts at his fathers funeral surrounded by all of his friends and family. He reminisces about the things he went through when his father was alive and finding comfort in his childhood friend/ex boyfriend. However he leaves when his girlfriend comes and end up on a cliff and it seems like he jumps off the cliff.
The lyrics are about someone waning to just sleep next to another person who the are close to, not for anything sexual but simply for comfort. They find that their mind is drifting to dark placed and they feel that they are becoming a burden to this other person. That if they spent less time with them, the less they need to heal but they still want help and they still want that other person to come to them anyway and talk them down.
Overall Story
These three songs aren’t vastly different in sound but all are equally beautiful and each holds strong emotions and messages. I did notice how the songs each become slower and the message more serious.
WILD starts as a ballad that speaks about finding someone who makes you feel chemistry with. Then in FOOLS it talks about how he was stupid for feeling the way he does but this doesn’t change how he feels. Eventually in the last song he sings about needing to be talked down and while I had thought that he had sung the other two in his own perspective, when I watched the last one I questioned that as TALK ME DOWN was a call for help that was, made obvious from the video clip, from the other boys perspective which, in my opinion, changed my entire view of all of the music videos.
